What Is the Difference Between Silicone Rubber and Fluoroelastomer?

Silicone rubber and fluoroelastomer are both commonly used elastomer materials in industrial manufacturing, automotive components, sealing products, and various rubber products. Although both materials can be used in high-temperature environments, their performance characteristics are quite different.

1. What Are the Main Differences Between Silicone Rubber and Fluoroelastomer?

Silicone rubber is an elastomer mainly based on a silicon-oxygen molecular structure. Its main advantages include excellent high- and low-temperature resistance, as well as good weather resistance, ozone resistance, and flexibility.

Fluoroelastomer, commonly known as FKM or FPM, is a high-performance rubber containing fluorine in its molecular structure. Its most notable advantages are excellent resistance to oils, fuels, and many chemical media.

Therefore, although both materials are widely used in industrial applications, they are designed to meet different requirements.

Silicone rubber is mainly selected for high- and low-temperature resistance and weatherability, while fluoroelastomer is more suitable for applications requiring excellent oil and chemical resistance.

2. Why Is Fluoroelastomer More Suitable for Contact with Oil?

In automotive, mechanical, and industrial applications, rubber components may come into long-term contact with gasoline, diesel fuel, lubricating oil, or mineral oil.

Standard silicone rubber is not oil resistant. Long-term exposure to oil may cause silicone rubber to swell or soften, which can affect dimensional stability and mechanical performance. Therefore, even when the operating temperature is high, silicone rubber should not be selected based only on its temperature resistance if the product will also be continuously exposed to oil.

Fluoroelastomer has excellent oil resistance and performs well when exposed to gasoline, diesel fuel, lubricating oils, mineral oils, and various fuels. For fuel systems, oil-line seals, engine components, and industrial equipment that is continuously exposed to oils or fluids, fluoroelastomer is generally a more suitable choice.

3. What Should You Consider When the Product Is Exposed to Acids, Alkalis, or Chemicals?

In addition to oils, some industrial equipment may come into contact with acids, alkalis, solvents, and other chemical media.

Fluoroelastomer has good resistance to many chemical media and is therefore widely used in industrial seals and components where both oil resistance and chemical resistance are required.

However, chemical resistance does not mean that fluoroelastomer is resistant to every acid or alkali. The actual performance can be affected by the type and concentration of the chemical, operating temperature, and exposure time. For demanding chemical applications, material compatibility should always be confirmed based on the specific medium.

 

4. What Are the Advantages of Silicone Rubber in High- and Low-Temperature Applications?

When the working environment mainly involves high temperatures, low temperatures, or significant temperature changes, silicone rubber offers clear advantages.

Silicone rubber can maintain good elasticity and flexibility across a wide temperature range while also providing excellent weather and ozone resistance. As a result, it is widely used in high-temperature air lines, cooling systems, heater systems, and rubber products used outdoors.

Fluoroelastomer also provides good high-temperature resistance, meaning both materials can be used in high-temperature environments. However, if the product does not require oil or special chemical resistance and the main requirement is resistance to high and low temperatures, silicone rubber can often meet the application requirements.

5. How Should You Choose Between Silicone Rubber and Fluoroelastomer?

If the product is mainly exposed to high or low temperatures, outdoor conditions, ozone, or significant temperature changes, and does not have long-term contact with oil, silicone rubber can be considered.

If the product needs to withstand long-term exposure to gasoline, diesel fuel, lubricating oils, mineral oils, certain acids and alkalis, or other chemical media, fluoroelastomer should be considered.

If the application involves high temperature + oil or high temperature + chemical media, material selection becomes even more important. The specific chemical medium, operating temperature, and exposure time should be evaluated before selecting the material.
